Beyond Just "Tired": How to Say "This is Hard" in Korean

When you're feeling overwhelmed, sometimes "I'm tired" just doesn't cover it. In Korean, there is a distinct difference between being physically exhausted and being mentally or emotionally drained.

Understanding this difference is key to expressing yourself authentically in real-life situations.

Physical Exhaustion: 피곤해 (Pi-gon-hae)

Use 피곤해 when you are describing physical tiredness.

This is the word for when:
  • You didn’t get enough sleep.
  • You’ve had a long day of physical work.
  • You’re ready to crash on the couch.

A Deeper Struggle: 힘들어 (Him-deu-reo)

When the situation goes deeper than just needing a nap, Koreans use 힘들어. This versatile phrase literally translates to "This is hard" and covers a much broader emotional spectrum:

  • Physically hard: A grueling workout or a difficult task.
  • Emotionally heavy: Dealing with stress, sadness, or a tough relationship.
  • Mentally exhausting: When you're "done" with a situation or feeling burnt out.

Asking vs. Answering: It's All in the Tone

One of the most helpful things about these phrases is that the word for asking and answering is exactly the same! You don't need to learn a new sentence structure; you just need to change your intonation:

  • Statement (Answering): Use a falling intonation to say "I'm tired" or "This is hard."
  • Question (Asking): Use a rising intonation at the end to ask someone else, "Are you tired?" or "Is it hard for you?"

The Magic of 요 (-yo): Making it Polite

While 피곤해 and 힘들어 are perfect for friends and family, you’ll want to be more respectful when speaking to elders, strangers, or colleagues.

To do this, simply add 요 (-yo) to the end:
  • Polite Physical Tiredness: 피곤해요 (Pi-gon-hae-yo)
  • Polite Emotional Struggle: 힘들어요 (Him-deu-reo-yo)

Adding 요 is a simple way to show respect while remaining honest about how you feel.
